Court time

At West Brisbane Falcons, we are committed to developing young basketballers and supporting our volunteer coaches and team managers.  While we understand that winning is important, our club places a greater emphasis on providing a positive and inclusive game day experience for all junior players regardless of skill level.

To support player development in our junior teams, we encourage our coaches to rotate players fairly and maintain a mix of skill levels on the court to foster teamwork and growth.

We also acknowledge that certain factors, such as team size, game flow and injuries can occasionally impact court time.  Coaches should always strive for balance and fairness, while adapting to the dynamics of each game.

During finals, the focus may shift slightly to reflect the competitive nature of these games.  Coaches may adjust playing time to give the team the best chance of success.  However, this is to be done thoughtfully, with respect for all players and their contribution throughout the season.

Fill in players - covering absences

If you need to use players from a lower division in the same age group, remember a player can only play up a division in the same age group twice. Once they fill in 3 times they must stay in the higher division team.

Example:

If a U16 Boys Div 2 player plays 3 games filling in for U16 Boys Div 1 then that player is considered an U15 Boys Div 1 player and cannot play in U16 Boys Div 2 anymore.

Also, if a Div 3 player plays 2 fill in games in Div 2 and one in Div 1 then they are considered to have played 3 games in higher divisions and will not be allowed to play in Div 3 anymore.

If you use a player from a lower age group they can fill in as many times as needed. However if they are already a member of a team in that higher age group they cannot fill in, in the same age-division.

Once a player has filled in for a particular team, they CANNOT fill in for another team in the same age group or division. i.e. an U10 Girl fills in for Falcons U12 Girls Div 2 White then she can only fill in for that team during the season in Div 2.

Players CANNOT fill in for a team in the same age group and division.

i.e. A U12 Boys Div 2 player cannot fill in for another U12 Boys Div 2 team

A player from a higher division CANNOT fill in for a team in a lower division.

i.e. A U12 Girls Div 1 player cannot fill in for a U12 Girls Div 2 team.

SO, if you need a fill in player they can come from the following:

Div 1 teams

-            Div 2 teams in the same Age Group

-            Any player from an age group below your own. i.e. U14s can borrow from U12s.

Div 2 teams

-            Div 3 teams in the same age group

-            Any player from an age group below your own. i.e. U14s can borrow from U12s.

Div 3 Teams

-            Div 4 teams in the same age group

-            Any player from an age group below your own. i.e. U14s can borrow from U12s.

Div 4 Teams

-            Any player from an age group below your own. i.e. U14s can borrow from U12s.

We CANNOT play any unregistered players. They will not be covered by insurance, and the game will be forfeited by BBI. Our coaching coordinator can support connecting you with another coach from another team answer any relevant questions: Coaching@wbfalcons.com.au

Junior Scorebench help guides and information

Each week a representative from each team is required on the score bench. This involves either doing the Ipad (Basketball Connect game scoring) or the game clock (Scoreboard Control Console).

The Team Manager for each team will co-ordinate the roster advising when it is each family's turn.

If you haven't done bench duty before, so you aren't thrown in the deep end when you are rostered on, let your Team Manager know and they can arrange for you to sit with someone on the score bench and learn how to do it.

Here are some guides to assist you

  1. Basketball Connect Scoring Guide - AKA the Ipad - Section 3 outlines how to score a game
  2. Scoreboard Control Console Manual  -  AKA The Clock
  3. Possession Arrow Explained
  4. Time Outs and Subs Explained
  5. Manual Scoresheet Explained - This is only required if the Ipad isn't working, this is rare.

Junior Team Selection Policy

The head coaches conduct team selection in consultation with our team coaches, our coaching coordinator and other committee members, in the lead up to the start of each season.

Selection process:

Players are primarily assessed on skill level, other valued attributes include commitment to training, games, punctuality and a positive attitude.   Team balance is also considered (E.g a balance of team offense and defense skills)

Friend requests:
Requests for players to play in the same team must be request by both parties. Requests from one party will not be considered.  Whilst we strive to accommodate these requests, we will prioritise team balance and player development.  If there is a skill difference that will impact the development of the players, they may not be placed in the same team.

Teams will only be formed if we have a coach to support the team for the season. We are always looking for coaches, and the club can assist in training. If you are interested in becoming a coach, please contact our coaching coordinator at coaching@wbfalcons.com.au.

All offers of help within the club are greatly appreciated. Being involved in your children’s basketball is not only very rewarding and lots of fun, it is a great way to support your children and help build the West Brisbane Falcons basketball family.
